Abstract

Hitherto, the Nigerian economy was highly regulated. By 1986 however, there was a transition to deregulation as the dominant economic philosophy with far reaching effects on the economy and the well being of the people. This paper reviews the effects of this shift in economic philosophy on one aspect of human well being, namely, food security using trend examination and descriptive methods. The paper submitted that while food supplies improved considerably after deregulation especially in the immediate post deregulation period, the ability of the citizens to
access this food deteriorated significantly and the food security position worsened. Appropriate suggestions were consequently offered.
