Abstract

This study adopted literature review to evaluate Universal Basic education as a basis for sustainable development in Nigeria. The review revealed that education for national development should not be construed as merely the
acquisition of literacy or other skills or the preparation of individuals for employment market but for Universal Basic Education to be relevant to sustainable development, it must be seen as a vision that seeks to balance human and economic well-being with cultural traditions and respect for available natural and human resources. Based on this, it was recommended among others that the entire education programme and practice be re-oriented to address sustainability.
