Abstract

This review on professionalism and health records management practice in
Nigeria aims at examining how professionalism relates to health records
management practice in Nigeria. This is achieved through objective
identification of basic principles of professionalism and their influence on health records management practice in Nigeria. It discusses the characteristics of a profession; health records management practice as a profession and the status of health records management practice in Nigeria. Also, health records managers’ code of ethics, professional association of health records management practitioners and the usefulness of health records management practice to the society are established. A qualitative analysis and theoretical discussion have been carried out to match evidence from existing records with evidence in the literature. It is observed that correlation exists between professionalism and health records management practice. Hence, it recommends among others the need for government at all levels to recognize the status of health records management and motivate them for increased work productivity.
