Abstract

This work examines the concept of traditional reference service and the changing
roles of reference librarians in digital age/obligation. The platforms for delivery
of the reference service and the role of the reference librarian have transformed
from that of reactive approach to a more dynamic and proactive approach to
enquiry’s heading. It also provides enquiry forms of references, and a real time
reference service. The study finally concludes that reference service in the digital
age has greatly changed and as such reference librarians must rise up to the
challenges in order to remain relevant, while upholding the traditional ethics of
their profession.
